When in Nueva Ecija Part 2: Puno's Ice Cream and Sherbet

Puno’s Ice Cream and Sherbet is a well-known ice cream brand in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija. It was established in the late 1940’s and was founded by Atanacio and Simeona Puno, natives of Arayat, Pamapanga and migrated to Cabanatuan City after World War II. They decided to put up the ice cream business to send their 9 children to school. 

The ice cream manufacturing process was mainly done manually in the ancestral home of the Puno family. Finished product storage and distribution operations of the company were also done in the same place. Products were vended in a pushcart as a street food.

They have been offering this frozen dessert to Novo Ecijanos for around six decades and now perfected the taste and quality of their products. They actually have 7 branches in Cabanatuan City, 17 scattered outlets around Nueva Ecija and even one in Baler, Aurora.

Some of the flavors are Buko Sherbet with Lychees, Ube Cheese, Strawberry, Fruit Salad, Cookies and Cream, Corn Queso, Chocolate with Cashew, Langka Cheese Cashew, and their bestseller Cheese Cashew Macapuno.

When in Nueva Ecija Part 1: Cabanatuan

Cabanatuan City is located in the central plains of Luzon and the largest city in Nueva Ecija,and It is popularly known for being home to more than 30,000 tricycles and prides itself as the "Tricycle Capital of the Philippines.When people ask me what to do here, I don't know exactly what to answe since our home is far from Cabanatuan for like an hour of travel. I graduated in NEUST (known before as Central Luzon Polytechnic University) Main Campus situated here spending almost 5 years of my life until I transferred to Manila for work. I would go home once or twice a month to visit my Father residing in Northern part of Nueva Ecija. My beloved province is also rich in history which is known to be one of the provinces that participated during the Spaniards revolution.

How to get to Nueva Ecija

The province of Nueva Ecija, thru Cabanatuan City, is easily reachable from Metro Manila through numerous bus lines plying the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and the Subic–Clark–Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX). Travel time is about three to four hours, depending on the traffic. Most, if not all buses, stop at Cabanatuan City’s central bus terminal, found just a little bit on the outskirts of the downtown area. Currently, there are no commercial airports in Nueva Ecija.

A trip to Edna's Cakeland

This bakeshop is one of the most visited place for those who are looking for pasalubong or simply craving for some sweet treats. It is a hidden shop located in Kapt. Pepe beside the Iglesia ni Cristo church. Upon entering, you will be thrilled with their different designs of cakes and they have pastries as well.You can have the delectable boxes of cheese rolls, mamon, yema and ube rolls, brownies and so many other pastries. They do also customize cakes for different occasions. We tasted some of their best sellers! They have dining area too where you can enjoy their homegrown bake goodies.

Batutay

It is not a typical longanisa made of pork meat,but instead made of cow’s meat. It is processed with garlic, MSG, pepper, salt, soy sauce, and sweeteners. “If you’re here in Cabanatuan, you should try to taste batotay as you can never go wrong! Trust me :) They also have other variety of longanisa such as garlic, hamonado and skinless.

Indeed, Nueva Ecija is a province that, for sure, will excite all food lovers /taste buddues looking for a new place to fall in love with. More of Nueva Ecija in my next blog! See you. :D
